Formed in the late '90s by singer/producer/songwriter Gregg Alexander, the New Radicals drew inspiration from the rock and soul sounds of the 1970s. Alexander, hailing from Grosse Point, MI, immersed himself in rock and R&B from a young age, picking up the electric guitar at 12. The band's debut album, Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too, released in 1998 under MCA, showcased Alexander's production and songwriting talents, highlighted by the hit single "You Get What You Give." Following the album's success, Alexander disbanded the group to focus on production work, leaving behind a promising but short-lived musical legacy.
