Biography
Nautilus Pompilius, the Sverdlovsk-Leningrad hybrid band, rose to fame in the late 1980s, solidifying Sverdlovsk as a prominent hub of Soviet rock alongside innovative groups from Leningrad. Led by charismatic frontman Vyacheslav Butusov and songwriter Ilya Kormiltsev, the band underwent various lineup changes throughout its nearly two-decade history, with its sound evolving from hard rock to new wave and eventually to harsh minimalist guitar rock in the '90s. Despite a decline in critical reception, Nautilus Pompilius found commercial success with albums like Titanic before disbanding after releasing the soundtrack for the cult classic film Brat in the post-Soviet era.
Founded in 1978 by Butusov and Dimitry Umetsky, Nautilus Pompilius initially gained attention with their Led Zeppelin-inspired hard rock sound before transitioning to a new wave trio in 1985. The band's breakthrough came in 1986 with the release of Razluka, which propelled them to fame across the Soviet Union. Their peak came with the 1989 hit album Knyaz' Tishyinyi and subsequent appearances in films and documentaries about Soviet rock. Despite internal conflicts leading to lineup changes, Nautilus Pompilius continued to experiment with their music and lyrical themes, leaving a lasting impact on the Russian music scene.
