Formed in 1995 at Western Kentucky University, Nappy Roots is a country-influenced rap group consisting of six members, with roots in Kentucky, Georgia, and California. The group's distinctive Southern bounce caught the attention of major labels, leading to a deal with Atlantic Records. Their debut album, Watermelon, Chicken and Gritz, was released in 2002, followed by Wooden Leather in 2003. After lineup changes and delays, they released The Humdinger in 2008 and The Pursuit of Nappyness in 2010. Collaborations with Organized Noize and mixtape releases kept the group active until their return in 2015 with The 40 Akerz Project, followed by Another 40 Akerz in 2017 featuring various guest artists.
