Masta Killa, known as the ninth member of the Wu-Tang Clan, made his mark with his intellectual lyrics and smooth delivery on the group's early albums. Despite being incarcerated during the recording of their debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), he became a prominent figure on subsequent Wu-Tang solo projects in the mid-'90s. Killa later embarked on his solo career with critically acclaimed releases like No Said Date in 2004 and continued to collaborate with various underground producers, culminating in his fourth studio album, Loyalty Is Royalty, in 2017, featuring an array of Wu-Tang members and other notable guests.

Similar to fellow Wu-Tang member Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa took several years to release his solo material, with his debut album marking a significant departure from the Wu-Tang sound. He worked closely with producers like RZA and Mathematics to craft his distinctive style, earning praise from both critics and fans within the Wu-Tang community. His subsequent releases, including Made in Brooklyn in 2006 and Selling My Soul in 2012, showcased his growth as an artist, incorporating guest appearances and production from notable figures in the hip-hop world.
