Biography

Massilia Sound System, a French reggae group formed in Marseille in 1984, blend elements of reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, and drum'n'bass in their music. Singing in both French and Occitan, a regional romance language, the group consists of MCs René Mazzarino (Papet Jali), François Ridel (Moussu Tatou), Laurent Garibaldi (Gari Gréu), turntablist Gilbert Kayalik (DJ Kayalik), keyboardist Janvié, and guitarist Blù. Their albums like Parla Patois (1992), Chourmo (1993), and Commando Fada (1995) gained them popularity beyond Marseille, leading to successful releases like 3968 CR 13 (2000), Occitanista (2002), and Massilia Fait Tourner (2004) on the French albums chart, after which they signed with Wagram Music for remastered editions of their early works in 2002. Lux Botté (Lux B), an MC and former member, passed away in 2008.
