Biography
Massiel, born María de los Ángeles Santamaría Espinosa on August 2, 1947, gained fame as the Spanish winner of the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest. Despite a stop-start career, she became a popular singing star in Latin America, with notable hits like "Brindaremos por El" and a hip-hop re-recording of her Eurovision victory, "La La La." Massiel retired briefly in the '70s and '90s, but continued to make music until at least the early 2000s. She also ventured into acting, starring in and recording the soundtrack for the movie Cantando a la Vida in 1998, portraying a Eurovision winner who vanishes mysteriously.
In 1981, Massiel's return to music sparked a boom in Mexican music, as she released successful albums like Tiempos Difíciles and Corazón de Hierro, showcasing the works of renowned songwriters such as José María Napoleón and Juan Gabriel.
