Marvin Santiago, born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1947, was a salsa legend who began his career as a vocalist with Rafael Cortijo before teaming up with Bobby Valentín to form a successful duo. Their album "Soy Boricua" became a salsa classic, resonating with Puerto Rican pride during a time of economic challenges. Santiago later went solo, earning the title "El Sonero del Pueblo" for his masterful improvisation and gritty lyrical portrayal of urban Latino life.
After a stint in prison for cocaine possession, Santiago embraced Christianity and continued to make music, exploring a "romantic salsa" style alongside artists like Andy Monta├▒ez and Gilberto Santa Rosa. Despite health struggles, Santiago remained active in the music scene until his passing in 2004, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of salsa music.
