Biography

Emerging from the Parisian artists' scene in 1986, Mano Negra, named after an Andalucian anarchist group, blended punk influences with global rhythms to create their signature "Patchanka" sound. Led by vocalist Manu Chao, the band gained popularity with their debut LP Patchanka in 1988, featuring the hit "Mala Vida." Signing with Virgin, their sophomore album Puta's Fever in 1989 solidified their status as France's top alternative act.

Mano Negra's focus shifted to South America with the 1992 "Cargo Tour," performing on a ship's stage and later by rail in Colombia. Their final album, 1994's Casa Babylon, highlighted Latin influences before disbanding. Manu Chao continued his music career with Radio Bemba and released his solo album Clandestino in 1998.
