In 1997, a group of teenagers in Guatemala City began blending ska, rock, boleros, hip-hop, cumbia, and reggae in an abandoned warehouse, creating music that defied expectations. Against the backdrop of grunge dominating the global scene, Malacates managed to carve out their own unique sound. Over two decades later, they have collaborated with music legends such as Oscar de Leon, Celso Pi├▒a, and Gaby Moreno, released five albums - the latest produced by the acclaimed K.C. Porter, and toured extensively worldwide, performing at festivals like SxSW and ViveLatino.
As they gear up for their sixth album, Malacates continues to push boundaries with their distinct sonic explorations, enlisting the talents of other prominent figures in Latin American music.
