Canadian electronic art pop group Majical Cloudz, initially a solo project of Devon Welsh, evolved into a duo with instrumentalist Matthew Otto in 2012. Their music, characterized by expansive synths and emotive vocals, gained critical acclaim with the release of Impersonator in 2013 on Matador Records. The duo's success led to opening for Lorde on her 2014 North American tour and the release of their second album, Are You Alone?, in 2015, followed by the EP Wait & See.
After announcing their disbandment in March 2016, Majical Cloudz played a final concert in Montreal and won the Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year for Are You Alone? a month later. The group's legacy is marked by their unique blend of lo-fi synth pop and poignant lyrics that resonated with audiences and critics alike during their brief but impactful career.
