Biography

The Mahavishnu Orchestra, a pioneering fusion group, straddled the worlds of rock and jazz with their sophisticated improvisations. Founded by John McLaughlin, the band's original lineup featured Jerry Goodman, Jan Hammer, Rick Laird, and Billy Cobham, releasing three intense albums in the early 1970s. A second iteration in 1974 saw a new lineup with Jean-Luc Ponty, Gayle Moran, Ralphe Armstrong, and Narada Michael Walden, followed by further changes. Despite an unsuccessful revival in 1984, the original lineup remains the most iconic and influential, showcasing the band's unique blend of musical styles and McLaughlin's eclectic interests before disbanding in 1975.
