Biography
Since their formation in 1995, Providence duo Lightning Bolt have blended technical precision with chaotic noise to become a powerful force in the indie scene. Their hypnotic sound, characterized by relentless drums and barely recognizable bass tones, reached a peak with the acclaimed 2003 album Wonderful Rainbow. The departure of a band member in 2001 led to a shift in vocal duties and a more demented approach to their music, culminating in the success of subsequent albums like Hypermagic Mountain and Earthly Delights. Despite sporadic touring and solo projects, Lightning Bolt continued to push boundaries with releases like Fantasy Empire in 2015 and Sonic Citadel in 2019.
Initially a three-piece art school project, Lightning Bolt's explosive drumming and Contortions-like basslines propelled them into the volatile noise and tribalism scene. The group's self-titled debut album in 1999 marked the beginning of their unique journey, later founding the Fort Thunder collective and solidifying their distinct sound on records like Ride the Skies. Over the years, the duo evolved their approach to traditional rock forms, garnering underground success and critical acclaim. Amidst side projects and collaborations, Lightning Bolt maintained their innovative spirit, making a triumphant return with new material on Fantasy Empire and Sonic Citadel after extended breaks.
