Biography

Formed in 1969 in Dayton, Ohio, Lakeside, originally known as Young Underground, evolved into a more mature sound with vocalist Mark Woods joining founder Stephen Shockley. After a series of record label changes, they found success with Solar Records, releasing hits like "It's All the Way Live" and the chart-topping "Fantastic Voyage" in 1980, followed by a string of R&B party hits and ballads. Lakeside's self-contained band continued to climb the charts with classics like "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "Outrageous."

In 1974, Lakeside, then known as Lakeside Express, and Liquid Funk, featuring drummer Fred Alexander, Jr., both landed in Los Angeles. After some lineup changes, Lakeside signed with Motown and later Solar Records, achieving their first Top Ten hit with "It's All the Way Live." Their breakthrough came in 1980 with "Fantastic Voyage," propelling them to the top of the charts and solidifying their success with follow-up hits like "Raid" and "Outrageous."
