Biography

Labelle, the female trio behind the proto-disco funk hit "Lady Marmalade," evolved from a typical '60s girl group to incorporate rock & roll and avant-garde influences, led by frontwoman Patti LaBelle and prolific songwriter Nona Hendryx. The quartet, originally known as the BlueBelles, saw commercial success with hits like "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman" before rebranding as Labelle in the '70s, embracing a fusion of R&B and rock with flamboyant stage personas.

Despite early hits and label changes, Labelle's peak came with the iconic "Lady Marmalade" in 1975, earning them their first gold album. Following the success of their first major hit, the group struggled to replicate its impact, leading to their disbandment in 1976. While Patti LaBelle pursued a successful solo career, Nona Hendryx ventured into funk-rock and avant-garde music scenes, marking the end of Labelle's musical journey until their reunion in 2008 for "Back to Now" before the passing of Sarah Dash in 2021.
