Biography
La Sonora Matancera, a historic Cuban tropical band established in Matanzas in 1924, has recorded over 4,000 songs featuring various Cuban and Latin rhythms. They signed with Victor in 1927, gaining radio popularity in the '30s and '40s, and later expanded their reach to the Americas after signing with Seeco in 1950. The group, known for their trumpet- and percussion-heavy sound, emigrated to Mexico City in 1960 and toured extensively, collaborating with renowned artists like Celia Cruz. Over the years, the band saw numerous personnel changes but maintained their distinctive coro backing singers and stage uniforms, pioneering a co-operative band structure.
In the '40s and '50s, La Sonora Matancera continued to evolve, releasing numerous singles and touring extensively across the Caribbean and Latin America. After signing with Seeco in 1950, they worked with Celia Cruz until 1965, solidifying their status as a household name. The band's sound incorporated a mix of boleros, son, danzon, and more, showcasing their versatility. Despite lineup changes and shifts in musical styles, La Sonora Matancera remained a prominent force in Latin music, celebrating milestones like their 65th anniversary in 1989. Even after the passing of key members, the band's legacy continued with new iterations led by Javier Vázquez, ensuring their enduring impact on the music world.
