He began his musical journey inspired by jump blues and R&B bands in the early 50s, forming his first group, the Jumping Jacks. Walker's raw saxophone-led instrumentals caught the attention of Motown Records after achieving local success, leading to hits like 'Shotgun' and 'Shake And Fingerpop.' His style evolved to a more lyrical sound in the late 60s, culminating in the US Top 5 hit 'What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)?'

Despite commercial highs in the late 60s and early 70s, Walker's career saw a decline in the following years. He briefly explored disco with albums like Hot Shot in 1976 before returning to Motown in 1983 with the release of Blow The House Down. Walker's collaboration with Foreigner on 'Urgent' became a standout moment in the 80s, showcasing his iconic saxophone skills.
