Biography

Iván Francisco Villazón Aponte, born in Valledupar, Colombia, is a prominent figure in the vallenato music scene. Demonstrating musical talent from a young age, he mastered instruments like the caja and guacharaca, becoming an iconic voice in Colombian folklore. In 1984, Villazón released his debut album "Arco Iris" with Fello Gámez, featuring a paseo by Rafael Escalona, marking the beginning of his successful career and establishing his unique style. Over the years, he collaborated with renowned vallenato musicians like Orangel 'El Pangue' Maestre and Raúl 'El Chiche' Martínez, solidifying his status as a generational vallenato reference.

With a career spanning over 40 years, Iván Villazón has recorded with more Reyes Vallenatos than any other singer, working alongside esteemed artists such as Iván Zuleta and Franco Arguelles. His latest album, "Un Mundo Real," released in March 2024 in collaboration with 'Tuto' López, a king amateur of the 2020 Festival Vallenato, showcases his enduring commitment to authentic vallenato music. In 2024, the 57th Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata paid tribute to Villazón, recognizing his significant contributions to the genre. Continuing to delight audiences, he recently released "Juglares Legendarios, Vol. 5, 'La Esencia,'" a collection of ten traditional vallenato songs in partnership with Ciro Meza.
