Biography

Hemant Kumar (born Hemanta Kumar Mukherjee) was a prominent figure in post-World War II Indian music, known for his deep voice and melodic compositions. He gained recognition for his interpretations of Rabindranath Tagore's songs and composed over 2,000 songs, scoring more than 150 Bengali and 50 Hindi films.

Making his radio debut in 1933 and recording his first disc in 1939, Kumar initially pursued a career in engineering and writing. Despite setbacks, he signed with Columbia Records and received critical acclaim for his recordings, eventually transitioning to a full-time music career. Collaborating with Salil Chowdhury, he pioneered Kavya-geeti, a new style of music. Kumar's success peaked in 1955 when he won a Filmfare award for Best Music Director for the film Nagin.
