Grand Funk Railroad, formed in 1968 by guitarist/songwriter Mark Farner and drummer Don Brewer, gained success through constant touring and a blues-rock power trio sound. Despite initial radio resistance, the band's strong work ethic led to multiple platinum and gold albums from 1969 to 1972. After a legal battle with manager Terry Knight, the band continued as Grand Funk, achieving a number one hit with "We're an American Band" produced by Todd Rundgren.
Keyboardist Craig Frost joined for the Phoenix LP, and the band saw further success with hits like "The Loco-Motion." However, interest waned after subsequent albums, leading to lineup changes and a temporary disbandment in 1976. Grand Funk Railroad regrouped in 1981 for two albums before disbanding again. Mark Farner pursued a solo career, while the band reunited periodically, releasing a benefit album in 1997 and a box set retrospective in 1999.
