Biography

Gang Starr, comprised of MC Guru and DJ Premier, emerged as a pioneering force in East Coast rap during the early '90s with acclaimed albums like Step in the Arena (1991) and Daily Operation (1992). Following their initial success, Premier became a sought-after producer for notable artists, while Guru embarked on solo projects, including the Jazzmatazz series. Despite occasional reunions for albums like Moment of Truth (1998) and The Ownerz (2003), the duo primarily focused on individual endeavors until Guru's passing in 2010.

Guru and Premier first collaborated in 1989, releasing their debut album No More Mr. Nice Guy (1989) before achieving critical acclaim with subsequent albums like Hard to Earn (1994). After Gang Starr's hiatus, Guru pursued his Jazzmatazz series and solo rap albums, while Premier continued his prolific production career with various artists. Premier eventually released One of the Best Yet (2019), a posthumous Gang Starr album featuring unreleased verses from Guru and collaborations with a diverse array of artists.
