G-Unit originated as the backing posse for 50 Cent, consisting of 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, and Tony Yayo, often accompanied by DJ Whookid or Cutmaster C. The group gained popularity in the early 2000s with a series of successful mixtapes. After Yayo's legal troubles, Young Buck joined the lineup, and G-Unit released their debut album, "Beg for Mercy," in 2003. The group saw success with singles like "Stunt 101" and "Poppin' Them Thangs."

As 50 Cent's prominence waned in the late 2000s, some G-Unit members departed from the group. G-Unit also included affiliates such as the Game, Olivia, and Mobb Deep during their active years.
