Frankie Ruiz, a prominent salsa singer, passed away on August 9, 1998, due to liver failure attributed to complications from AIDS. Known for his contributions to the Salsa Sensual style, Ruiz played a significant role in the resurgence of salsa's popularity in the 1970s. Hailing from Patterson, New Jersey, he began his musical journey at a young age, making his debut with Charlie L├│pez y Su Orquesta as a child.
After moving to Puerto Rico in 1965, Ruiz developed a love for salsa music, particularly inspired by the band La Soluci├│n. Immersing himself in their performances, he quickly learned their repertoire. Ruiz's persistence paid off when he impressed the band during a last-minute performance, leading to an invitation to join as a full-time member. Transitioning to Tommy Olivencia's orchestra in the early 1970s, Ruiz achieved success with hits like "La Duda" before launching a solo career in the mid-1980s. Despite his vocal talent, Ruiz battled substance abuse issues and a tumultuous lifestyle.
