His patriotic compositions later drew attention from American intelligence officers and inspired Fidel Castro's Cuban Revolution.

After relocating to New York in the mid-'30s, Santos collaborated with the Flores Quartet and delivered memorable performances on songs like "Venganza" and "Perdón." Following a stint in the military during World War II, Santos returned to his music career with a renewed focus on patriotic themes, composing songs like "Sierra Maestra." Despite his wild private life and international performances, Santos ultimately retired in Florida, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate in the Latin music scene.
