Biography
Cannonball Adderley, known for his exuberant and happy alto saxophone sound, quickly became one of the most popular jazz musicians due to his intelligent approach to presenting music. After a successful stint with Miles Davis, Adderley formed a successful quintet with his brother Nat and pianist Bobby Timmons, achieving hits like "This Here" and "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy." The group's sound evolved over the years to incorporate funky rhythms and electronics, but Adderley's sudden death cut short his musical evolution.
During his Riverside years from 1959-1963, the Adderley Quintet specialized in soulful renditions of hard bop, with Adderley excelling in straight-ahead settings. The addition of Yusef Lateef and Joe Zawinul expanded the group to a sextet, but after Riverside collapsed, Adderley signed with Capitol and shifted towards more commercial recordings. Despite some lineup changes, including Charles Lloyd briefly replacing Lateef, the quintet continued to produce successful music. Adderley's untimely death in 1975 left his musical legacy unfulfilled, as he was beginning to revisit his earlier works on his final album, Phenix.
