In 2008, the original members from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, who now make up Banda Corona De Rey, decided to form the group with an eye towards the future after much deliberation. The name originated during a last-minute jam session, known as Wipa/Matona in Mazatlán, where musicians come together and improvise. They were set to perform with a borrowed tambora drum that had the logo of Banda La Costeña, featuring a C and a crown, as "La Costeña" is nicknamed La Reina Del Pacífico. When asked if the band had a name, one of the musicians jokingly looked at the letter C and the crown on the drum and suggested "Corona Del Rey," which became the band's name. This led them to play at private events, clubs, and eventually record their first material.
