Formed in 1976 by the late Oberdan Magalhães, Banda Black Rio established a unique sound blending rhythm & blues with gafieira, samba, and jazz influences. Their breakout hit "Maria Fumaça" from their self-titled LP in 1977 propelled them to fame, drawing comparisons to soul-funk giants like Kool and the Gang and Earth, Wind and Fire. Despite disbanding in 1980 after releasing two more LPs, the group made a comeback in 1999 with a new lineup led by Oberdan's son, William Magalhães. Throughout their career, Banda Black Rio left a lasting impact on the music scene with their innovative fusion of genres.

Featuring a rotating lineup of talented musicians including José Carlos Barroso and Luís Carlos dos Santos, Banda Black Rio's music resonated with audiences in Brazil and beyond, earning them a reputation as pioneers of the soul-funk genre.
