Originating from Ithaca, New York, Balam Acab is the brainchild of Alec Koone, inspired by a Mayan demigod who conjured rainbows with arrows. Initially an experimental noise venture in high school, Koone revitalized the project during his time as a music student at Ithaca College, infusing dubstep, U.K. bass, and R&B influences into his ethereal compositions. Drawing parallels to artists like Grouper and Salem, Balam Acab's debut EP, See Birds, released in 2010 under Tri Angle Records, garnered critical acclaim. The EP was later reissued, followed by Koone's debut album, Wander/Wonder, in September 2011, solidifying his place in the music scene.
