Baby Huey

Baby Huey, a prominent figure in the Chicago soul scene, gained local adoration for his dynamic live performances and release on Curtis Mayfield's Curtom label. Born James Ramey in 1944, Baby Huey's larger-than-life stage presence, due to a glandular condition, captivated audiences as he transitioned from R&B to a psychedelic soul sound reminiscent of Otis Redding. Despite signing with Curtom and recording his debut album, "The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend," which featured Curtis Mayfield's songs and a cover of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come," Baby Huey tragically passed away from a drug-related heart attack before its release in 1971.

Following Baby Huey's untimely death, his backing band, the Babysitters, attempted to continue with a new lead singer, the young Chaka Khan, who later found success with funk band Rufus. Baby Huey's only album has since become a coveted collector's item among soul enthusiasts, showcasing his lasting impact on the music industry despite his limited mainstream recognition beyond his hometown.
