Ahmet Kaya was awarded the title of Best Artist at the Magazin Gazetecileri Derneği awards ceremony on February 10, 1999. Following his statement about including a Kurdish song in his upcoming album, he faced criticism. Subsequently, due to alleged incidents during a concert in Berlin in 1993, he was involved in legal proceedings, leading to two separate cases with a total of 10.5 years of imprisonment sought by the DGM. He left Turkey in June 1999. While recording his album "Hoşçakalın Gözüm" on November 16, 2000, in Paris, he passed away from a heart attack at his home in the Porte de Versailles district. A funeral service with over 30,000 attendees was held on November 17, and he was laid to rest at Paris' Père Lachaise cemetery.
