Ahlam

Ahlam is a Moroccan electro-trad band signed to Barbarity label in Switzerland, following in the footsteps of Aisha Kandisha's Jarring Effects. They blend traditional instruments like djembe and mandolin with rai-type vocals, electric guitar, bass, and electronic sampling, creating a unique sound that fuses indigenous Moroccan music with Western rock, dance, and dub. Their debut album, Revolt Against Reason, features a mix of Moroccan pop and experimental electronic elements, while their second album, Messages from Arabs, co-produced by Bill Laswell, leans more towards a club-friendly vibe with programmed beats and samples, albeit losing some of the initial unpredictability.

Ahlam stands out in the world music scene for their unconventional approach to Moroccan music, advocating for non-violence and peace through their music. Their lyrical content and music challenge the norms of Moroccan music by incorporating a mix of traditional and modern elements, creating a radical and forward-thinking sound that pushes boundaries.
