Biography

Led by former Sierra Maestra drummer Juan De Marcos Gonzalez, the Afro-Cuban All Stars have played a crucial role in popularizing Afro-Cuban music globally. Formed in the late '90s, the band's multi-generational lineup spans various Latin dance music genres, from mambo to bolero. Gonzalez's vision for the group was to blend traditional Cuban music heritage with a forward-looking sound, attracting top Cuban instrumentalists like pianist Ruben Gonzalez and trumpet player Yanko Pisaco. Vocalists such as Pio Leyva, Ra├║l Planas, and Manuel "Puntillita" Licea have also lent their talents to the ensemble, with later additions including Pedro Calvo and Caridad Hierrezuelo.

The Afro-Cuban All Stars made their mark with the groundbreaking 1997 album A Toda Cuba Le Gusta, recorded during the iconic Buena Vista Social Club sessions. Gonzalez, who had gained global recognition with Sierra Maestra since the late '70s, aimed to showcase the full spectrum of Cuban music through the band's diverse repertoire. Embracing a mix of rhythms and styles, the group's innovative approach has solidified their status as pioneers in the Afro-Cuban music scene, with a lineup of exceptional musicians who continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
