Baiji, also known as the Yangtze River dolphin, was a species of freshwater dolphin native to the Yangtze River in China. It was declared functionally extinct in 2006, with no confirmed sightings since 2002. The decline of the baiji was primarily attributed to habitat destruction, pollution, and overfishing in the Yangtze River.

Efforts were made to conserve the baiji, including establishing reserves and conducting surveys, but unfortunately, these were not successful in preventing its extinction. The loss of the baiji serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect endangered species and their habitats.
