Following the departure of Ethiopia's Marxist ruler in 1991, the country embraced newfound freedom and an influx of foreign cultural influences that were previously restricted. Among the many Ethiopian bands exploring these new musical horizons, the Abyssinia Band stands out for its enthusiastic embrace of Western music styles, fusing them with traditional Ethiopian music to create a contemporary and richly layered sound.
