Influenced by '60s garage rock legends like 13th Floor Elevators, the band 1986 consists of Giorgio Angelini (vocals, guitar), Cully Symington (drums), and Drew Pennebaker (bass). Angelini, a former member of the indie pop group the Rosebuds, met Symington in Austin, leading to the formation of the trio after reconnecting with Pennebaker. Their debut EP, featuring guest appearances from Jeff Pinkus and Bill Elm, preceded the release of their full-length album Nihilism Is Nothing to Worry About in July 2006 via Palentine Records, with production by Mark Deutrom and mixing by Thom Monahan. The band's sound is characterized by raw, barroom indie rock reminiscent of the '60s era.
